New industry standard - "Access To Premises"

 

The recent release of brand new legislation titled “Access to Premises Standards 2010” will be effective from 1st May 2011. Whilst implementation of the standard does not commence for some time, architects are already making plans to ensure their building designs are compliant with the new requirements. The legislation is pushing Australia towards standards that already exist in most of Europe and the USA.

In basic terms, the new piece of legislation means that:

  • a far higher percentage of unisex disabled toilets, amongst other fixtures, have to be included in almost every building type.
  • design features such as barrier free drinking fountains and adjustable benches are now a serious consideration

The inclusion of disability equipment helps enormously in making buildings anti-discriminatory towards people with a disability, whilst mitigating the building owner from litigation.
