Barrier-free drinking fountains from Caredesign help architects, builders and educational institutions comply with the latest Government initiatives to improve the lifestyle and opportunities of young people with disabilities.
The fountains ease the difficulty of facilities that are either too high for some people to use, or cannot be accessed from a wheelchair, says Caredesign, which is a company dedicated to specialist bathroom equipment that maximises the independence, dignity, safety and comfort of people with disabilities.
Caredesign’s range of barrier-free drinking fountains for use in both public spaces and workplaces is founded on experience gained in supplying more than 200 projects for people with disabilities, says Caredesign National Product Manager, Mr Tim Knowles. These projects have involved partnering with prominent educational facilities, aged care operators, hospitals, disability support centers, hotels and resorts, major construction companies and developers, as well as leading architects.
“Our barrier-free stainless steel drinking fountains – which accommodate both wheelchair and pedestrian patrons – are ideally designed to satisfy the aims of the Government’s National School Pride program as well as the Building the Education Revolution (BER) initiatives.
The fountains’ design and construction ensures such facilities are fully compliant with all aspects of relevant current legislation, meet Australian Standards AS1428.1/2/3, as well as fulfil the Government’s commitment to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
These programmes help ensure that children with a disability are given equal opportunity to participate in mainstream schooling.
“As an Australian supplier of specialist bathroom fixtures, totally orientated to the provision of people with a disability and their carers, we have supplied numerous schools and work closely with the Department of Commerce and Education in tailoring solutions for students with various special needs,” said Mr Knowles.
Caredesign’s Accessible Pedestal Mounted Drinking Fountain projects forward from its mounting, allowing a wheelchair to be slid beneath. This fountain has an easily-accessible front push button, a polished chrome-plated brass bubbler head and satin-finish stainless steel bowl. The neck has either a galvanised finish or a green powder-coated finish over a galvanised substrate.
Caredesign’s Wall Mounted Drinking Fountain is also designed for wheelchair access, with a projecting bubbler, front push button and vandal-resistant bottom plate. The bubbler is made from polished chrome-plate brass and has a matching brushed finish backpanel.
Where users are likely to be drinking at different heights, the Wall Mounted Split Height Drinking Fountain is the solution. Its Hi-Lo design provides dual fountains with matching finishes at the levels desired by users.
The Caredesign range which also includes accessible toilets and height-adjustable workbenches and change tables - is applicable to public and workplace facilities where access can create problems for those who have disabilities.
“While wheelchair access to buildings and toilets is a long-recognised right enshrined in the law, other less obvious barriers remain to basic services such as drinking fountains. With these in mind, Caredesign’s range of barrier-free fountains is suitable for schools and universities as well as a wide range of other facilities. These include public squares and toilet facilities, parks, sports venues, municipal pools, concert halls and galleries, museums, factory floors, aged care facilities, rehabilitation centres, hospital foyers, office plazas, public transport waiting areas, airports, fitness centres, walkways and beach promenades, shopping malls and street markets.
