A laboratory rapid response safety kit offering one-step neutralisation of either liquid or vapour spills of some of the world’s most highly toxic chemicals is being introduced by Enware.
The FAST-ACT™ first response treatment products range is one of the world’s most advanced chemical hazard neutralization technologies, originally developed for the US military to counter Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs).
FAST-ACT™ (First Applied Sorbent Treatment – Against Chemical Threats) has been successfully trialled on hydrofluoric acid at the Australian National University to complement its successful use on the most Toxic Industrial Chemicals (TICs) and Toxic Industrial Materials (TIMs) in the market.
This means it is unique and ideal for use throughout Australia and New Zealand on chemicals most likely to pose hazards in laboratories here, says Enware Product Manager Scott Whittaker, whose company, Enware Australia Pty Ltd, has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Nanoscale Corporation USA to distribute FAST-ACT™ in both countries.
The laboratory kit – involving unique technology available exclusively through Enware – helps neutralise toxic chemical incidents rapidly (liquid or vapour), facilitating rescues where these are needed and reducing the need for total evacuations.
The kit’s wall-mounted unit can be tailored to user requirements, employing 70g, 300g, 500g, 3kg and 5kg shaker tubs of the product, and 1,2 and 4kg fire extinguisher style pressurised cylinders for liquids, vapour and off-gassing.
The technology break-through enables relatively small quantities of product to be used immediately on toxic liquid or vapour incidents.. This is because FAST-ACT™ technology creates a massive increase in the powder’s active surface area.
“In addition to being highly effective on hydrofluoric acid – which can quickly cause severe skin, eyes and respiratory irritations - the kits are quickly effective on typical small spills of highly toxic chemicals found in laboratories. The shaker tubs and pressure cylinders work very well in situations most likely to be encountered in laboratories, including spills in confined spaces and vapours around fume cupboards, for example.
Benefits of Enware’s FAST-ACT™ kits also include:
-
Broad applicability for situations where there is no way of knowing immediately what chemical is involved.
-
FAST-ACT™ also reduces the need to have multiple spill kits. It reacts with a wide range of acids, halogenated compounds, phosphorus compounds and organic compounds.
-
High portability and easy application FAST-ACT™ is supplied in extinguisher-style pressurized cylinders that are easy to operate and do not require any special training for users. Shaker bottles and pails are also available in a variety of sizes to best suit particular application requirements.
FAST-ACT™ joins Enware’s broad families of safety and environmental technologies, including Enware emergency shower and decontamination technology manufactured in Australia to comply with the toughest regulations covering workplace safety.
