Maintenance season poses peak risk for slip, fall and trip accidents in industry

As annual maintenance shutdowns approach over the Christmas-New Year period, employers are being urged to focus on slip, fall and trip accidents that now account for more than 25,000 new workers compensation cases a year in Australia.

The maintenance season is one of the peak times for use of use of lubricants, cleaning fluids, paints and other potentially hazardous substances, says safety shower and safe materials handling specialist Enware Australia.

Enware Safe-Equip is introducing advanced spill pallet and workstation systems that  help combat slip, fall and trip accidents, as well as tough portable spill containment systems that minimize losses of industrial fluids and protect workers against hazards.

The versatile Enpac polyethylene bunding systems are suitable for applications such as chemical drum storage, chemical transfers, disposal of hazardous waste, vehicle maintenance and oil spill cleanups.

They also cut cleanup costs and minimize the risk of slip and fall accidents when used under fuel and chemical storage units in locations such as construction sites, farms, factories, mines and machinery washdown and maintenance facilities, says Enware Managing Director Mr Paul Degnan.

Products include:

  • Easily erected Enpac berm and complementary Enpac Storm Sentinel drain and erosion protection products. Ranges  include containment berms for use:

    - Beneath equipment left overnight containing fuel
    - Beneath small fuel tanks
    - Beneath generators with fuel tanks
    - And for chemical containment and holding.
  • Drums Workstations™ in 2, 4, 6 and 8-drum capacities are designed to integrate into factory and workshop floors, optimizing space, safety and efficiency. Constructed in tough, one-piece polyethylene, they are easy to load with low-profile design, optional ramp and large sump capacity. They are ideal as a dispensing station or work centre.  Multiple Drums Workstations can be combined by a Link-lock™ feature, combining the workstations into a tough, stable surface that won’t rust or corrode.
  • Poly-Rack System™ & The Mini-Racker for safer dispensing and storage of drums. Components of this system include lightweight (54kg) Poly Racker base with patented enclosed 387.6 litre sump; Poly Stacker system (25kg) that can be used with the Racker or to store up to four drums on a Poly-Slimline 6000 pallet; and Poly Shelf system that easily attaches to the Poly Stacker for safe simultaneous drum dispensing. As the names suggests the Mini-Racker version is suitable for smaller containers. This system includes The (5.6kg) Mini Racker suitable for 20 & 25 litre drums with a sump capacity of  30-litres. The Mini Stacker system attaches to the shelf and when used with the Mini Racker can be built to store up to 6-drums.
  • IBC2000i™ spill containment unit,. This one-piece 100 per cent polyethylene unit features a 144mm(L) 1420mm (W) footprint  and 3268.7 KG UDL load bearing capacity to accommodate most IBC dispensing units. The IBC containment bunds provides a sump capacity of 1457.45-litres.
  • Drums-Up™ incidental spill protection units which offers temporary protection from incidental barrel spills.   Accommodating drums up to 205 litres, it has a 74.1 litre sump capacity. Drums-Up Jr™ has a 28.5 litre sump for smaller containers.
  • Poly-Dolly™ With a load-bearing capacity of UDL 270kg and a large 304-litre sump capacity, the Poly-Dolly is a mobile dispensing station for 205-litre drums with 24-hour protection against spills and leaks.

The latest National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) figures show that Australian industries particularly prone to workers compensation claims include Transport and storage; Agriculture, forestry and fishing;  Manufacturing; Construction; and Mining

The same NOHSC figures show Australian industry now has
well over 25,000* new workers compensation cases a year where falls, slips and trips result in death, permanent disability or a temporary disability resulting in an absence from work of more than a week.

Sprains or strains of joints or adjacent muscles now account for more than 50 per cent of new workers compensation cases recorded by the NOHSC.

Mr Degnan says the Enpac range is unique in Australasia because it brings together in one system a complete range of solutions to materials handling issues commonly arising across a broad spectrum of industrial applications.
