When a disabled, frail or elderly person can’t use bathroom or kitchen facilities because of height or reach problems, the trend these days is to redesign the facilities rather than require the person to adapt to them.
The guiding philosophy is that impaired mobility should not limit a person’s life opportunities.
A solution is offered by Enware Caredesign, which supplies a comprehensive range of height or reach-adjustable facilities, the combination packages of which are becoming far more ingenious in what they can do for users.
Among the latest products that can be raised and lowered are shampoo basins, kitchen benchtops, cupboards and sinks. Caredesign’s height-adjustable wash basin, for example, is easily usable by a person of almost any height or disability.
Then there are products designed to aid the person who has difficulty in using standard bathroom facilities due to restricted movements or limb strength. These facilities include ergonomic toilet seats and support arms, wash and dry toilets for hands-free personal hygiene, ergonomic grab rails and shower curtain rails, shower chairs and seats.
It is estimated that more than two million working age Australians have a disability, representing around 17 per cent of all working age people in the country.
Caredesign’s range of Pressalit Care electrically driven lifts for kitchen worktops and wall cupboards has been introduced to enhance the safety and comfort not just of older folk, but of younger people with disabilities.
The trend in toileting is towards hands-free personal hygiene for people of all ages and all levels of physical capability.
A stylish new toilet from Enware Caredesign is the Wash and Dry toilet. The toilet cleans with water instead of paper, combining bidet and warm air drying with a conventional WC function. The Wash and Dry toilet features one-touch automatic functions and either infrared or hand control options.
Currently, an estimated 6,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care nursing homes.
A new trend is to house such people in purpose-built apartments. In 2008, Youngcare Australia completed the construction in Brisbane of state-of-the-art apartments specifically designed to house young Australians with high care needs who had previously been housed in nursing homes (using Caredesign basins).
