Handy, simple SpillPal containment units insure against spills on major water security project

Portable Enpac SpillPal spill containment units provided by Blackwoods ACT are being used to ensure worker safety and good environmental management on a major dam development project being delivered for ACTEW Corporation by the Bulk Water Alliance, as part of a suite of water security projects for the ACT region.

The easily set up SpillPal flexible bunding units from the Enware Safe-equip catalogue are ideal for tasks such as portable pumping and the casual re-fuelling of trucks and tankers in applications as diverse as building, construction, civil engineering, heavy transport, mining and quarrying, resources, water and waste water .

The Bulk Water Alliance approached Blackwoods ACT for help and were introduced by Matthew Shanley to the SpillPal solution as the best for their needs.

“We originally purchased the smaller 610 mm by 610 mm SpillPal and found it worked really well for placing under small generator and pump units at the upgrading of the Googong Dam spillway,” said Steve Lawler, Senior Environmental Officer working on an upgrade of the Googong Dam spillway. “These pumps, which contain 5-10 litres of fuel, fit neatly into the SpillPal.”

Bulk Water Alliance is delivering in excess of $300 million worth of capital works for the ACTEW Corporation, which will be finished in 2011. The work includes an enlargement of the Cotter Dam, transferring water from the Murrumbidgee River to the Googong Reservoir, and upgrading the Googong Dam spillway.

Contractor partners to the Bulk Water Alliance are John Holland, Abigroup and GHD.

“Through Blackwoods ACT, we also purchased a larger 2.4 metre SpillPal, which was handy for catching any spills and splashes from bigger plant such as tankers and other machinery when these were being refueled,” Mr Lawler said.

“As well, we’ve used it under a large portable pump that was dewatering a former quarry and operated continuously for days. Such pumps generally run cleanly, but it’s essential that they are bunded to prevent fuel spills – especially when you are working near a water course, as we are.

“It was important to catch any fluids that might run down the spillway and pollute the sediment pond at the bottom or endanger the safety of the men working on the spillway.”

He said that the Bulk Water Alliance needed equipment that was handy and simple to use. “We looked at other ones. Some of them were made of rigid plastic, with latches to hold up the sides, but weren’t suitable for driving vehicles onto. SpillPal rolls itself out and is easy to drive onto.

“It’s also practical, taking just a couple of minutes to set up. If something like this takes ten minutes to prepare for a two minute refueling job, that’s not workable and the men won’t use it.”

Enware Safe-Equip’s enpac SpillPal comes in different models that store anything from a single drum (610 mm x 610 mm x 100 mm) to eight drums or two IBCs (1220 mm x 2400 mm x 100 mm). Sump capacities range from 37.9 litres to 302.8 litres.

It provides spill control for drums, machine parts, tanks and generators and can also be used as a wash-down pad or pumping station.

No ramps are required for SpillPal, as the containment device has flexible sidewalls that spring back to form, allowing easy drive-in and drive-out access with a hand truck or forklift.

“Our product solutions such as SpillPal can secure your profits and ensure you protect both the environment and your workers,” said Enware Australia Pty Ltd Managing Director Mr Paul Degnan.

He said the Enware range is unique in Australasia because it brings together in one system a complete range of solutions to materials handling issues commonly arising across a broad spectrum of industrial applications.

These solutions:

  • Limit worker exposure to accidents and to hazardous materials
  • Reduce material costs by reclaiming spills and maximising material utilisation
  • Increase productivity, as lightweight handling and storage products let workers move more products quickly and safely
  • Reduce disposal costs by reclaiming spilled material
  • Lower insurance costs, as the right handling products may reduce workers compensation premiums

SpillPal is part of the extensive Enpac Spill Prevention and Containment range distributed by Enware Safe-Equip (info@enware.com.au) to minimize losses of industrial fluids and protect workers against accidents.
