Case Study: Modbury Hospital SA Upgrade Project
Background
In early 2019, Silver Thomas Hanley (STH) commenced work on an extensive \$96 million upgrade to Modbury Hospital in South Australia, to be completed by February 2022.
The scope of the redevelopment included a complete overhaul of the surgical floor, an extension to the Emergency Care Unit, and the construction of a new, purpose-built 20-bed Palliative Care Unit alongside a four-bed High Dependency Unit.
The project was later expanded to include an additional ward and a refurbishment of the hospital’s front façade and foyer.
Solution
As part of the redevelopment, Enware supplied a range of water management solutions tailored to the clinical environment. This included the **eSQX Touch-Free Wall Mixer** with controlled-temperature heated water and the **revolutionary all-in-one Health Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV)**—a system purpose-designed to reduce water stagnation and improve infection control in Health and Aged Care settings.
Aurecon’s lead hydraulic engineer, Karl Krenn, highlighted the benefits of the Health TMV:
“It means less plumbing in the wall. Overall, it’s cheaper. And the architect’s a little bit happier because they don’t have another wall box which they have to cater for. It just makes for a cleaner, cheaper installation.”
This design efficiency also makes the unit easier and less costly to service—another key advantage for the client.
Having worked with Enware for over 20 years, Krenn shared why the partnership has endured:
“They’ve always listened and stand out from others in the industry for their capabilities.”
An additional challenge arose during the project with the use of chrome fixtures in the hospital’s laser room, where reflective surfaces posed a hazard. Enware’s Research and Development team responded quickly, providing a custom solution with **matte black-finished fixtures** to absorb rather than reflect the lasers.
Within just a few weeks, samples were delivered and approved by the hospital’s senior management—demonstrating Enware’s commitment to responsive, fit-for-purpose design.
